It is difficult to accept. But if your church is homophobic, biphobic or transphobic, it’s time to leave. You have to ask yourself for whose benefit do you attend? What are the hateful messages doing to your mind? Why are some Christians so bent on hurting gays and lesbians?
When it comes to transgender people and issues, some people in the faith communities are ambivalent, instead of getting more information to get a better understanding, they are quick to judge.
Proverbs 4:5 “Get wisdom, get understanding; do not forget my words or turn away from them”. In other words, we are compelled as Christians to do more research, study more about issues we don’t understand.
We believe God’s wordswhich sayy LGBTQ people are “wonderfully and fearfully made”.
God is not the author of confusion! Whilst he has given us freewill, he expects us to use it judiciously. If your church or pastor is dangerously homophobic, LEAVE. You will find God in your heart.
I remember this hymn, we learnt it when I was young.
God be in my head, and in my understanding;
God be in mine eyes, and in my looking;
God be in my mouth, and in my speaking;
God be in my heart, and in my thinking;
God be at mine end, and at my departing.
God is therefore not in any building, God is everywhere and not in the places that seeks to destroy our humanity.
Psalm 71:5, “For you have been my hope, Sovereign Lord, my confidence since my youth”
Romans 9:19-21, reminded us of God in this metaphor, as the potter who is able to make and unmake clay pots. To God, transgender people are made fearfully with the ability to transition from one gender to fit the mindset of the person is absolutely befitting in God’s eyes.
The verses say, “You will say to me then, “Why then does he still find fault? For who can resist his will?” But who indeed are you, a human being, to argue with God? Will what is moulded say to the one who molds it, “Why have you made me like this?” Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same lump one object for special use and another for ordinary use?”
It seems we are no longer able to think for ourselves anymore. We have allowed others to do the thinking and we simply accept the poisonous rhetoric of their depressing conclusions, as if they hold the monopoly to the presence of God.
We are entitled to our faith, beliefs and understanding of God’s ineffable love and the inclusive gospel of Jesus Christ, that places Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) people also at the centre of God’s love.
1 Timothy 4:12, “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity”
I call on everyone to make your peace with God and not your church.

Jide Macaulay is the founding Pastor and CEO of House of Rainbow CIC. British-Nigerian born in London, a Christian minister since 1998, a dynamic and an inspirational speaker, author, poet, pastor and preacher, HIV activist, holds a degree in Law, Masters degree in Theology and Post-graduate certificate in Pastoral Theology. Jide focuses his ministry on inclusion and reconciliation of sexuality, spirituality and human rights. He writes for various Christian and secular Journals. He has authored several books, Poetry Inspired 2001 and Pocket Devotion for LGBT Christians 2005, he has won several awards including the 2003 and 2007 Black LGBT Community Award for “Man of the Year” for his work helping people of faith. Shortlisted for the National Diversity Awards 2014, in the category for Positive Role Model. He served from 2007 to 2013 as Executive Board member and Co-Chair of Pan Africa International Lesbians and Gay Association. He is currently Regional Africa Representative of Global Interfaith Network, Board of Trustee at Kaleidoscope Trust UK, and a Trained Volunteer Champion at Afruca Children’s Charity.
