Where we come from, and where we want to go
The conversations began in Sweden in 2015 during Stockholm Pride when we could not go in the pride park due to high costs and sat outside instead. A group of trans refugees recognised the need to move beyond informal circles of care and build a collective platform with a stronger political voice and wider reach. Many of us shared experiences of being spoken about rather than listened to, both within asylum systems and within broader migrant and LGBTQ organising spaces.
While trans refugees were frequently positioned as beneficiaries, victims, or case studies, there were few spaces where we could define our own priorities, produce our own knowledge, and organise collectively around the issues affecting our lives. What brought us together was a shared commitment to self-representation, community building, and social justice. We wanted to create spaces where trans and gender-diverse refugees and racialised LGBTQ people could connect, share experiences openly, and find a sense of belonging while navigating displacement, racism, transphobia, and legal precarity.By 2017 we had strengthened and formalised our organising.
We held our first General Assembly, developed our statutes, and registered the organisation. Shortly afterwards, we secured our first grant, which enabled us to expand our work and establish a stronger foundation for community organising and advocacy.A decade later, Queerstion Media has grown into a trans refugee-led organisation working across storytelling, advocacy, political education, and community organising. Our work has included creating safer spaces for our communities, supporting asylum systems training, amplifying underrepresented voices, and building solidarity across movements.
Throughout this growth, our core purpose has remained unchanged: ensuring that trans and gender-diverse refugees are not merely represented in conversations that affect them, but are actively shaping them.
